Keynotes Speakers 2017

Rob Frohwein CEO and Co-Founder at Kabbage Inc.

In 2008, Rob Frohwein recognized that many companies were offering automated access to data via APIs like eBay. He realized small businesses simply needed to share this data to allow lenders to make better, faster decisions and provide great user experiences. With the help of Kathryn Petralia and Marc Gorlin, he founded Kabbage to leverage the power of real-time data automation to streamline lending and has since raised over $240 million from a number of international investors. Today, the Kabbage Platform has funded more than $2 billion in loans directly through and and through relationships with partnering organizations worldwide.

Before founding Kabbage, Rob established, led and advised a number of successful businesses, including LAVA Group, U.S. Micro Corporation and Surgical Biologics. Additionally, he served in business development and legal capacities for ZapMedia and Security First Network Bank. Rob practiced law with Troutman Sanders LLP, co-authored three books on intellectual property and co-hosted a career-centered radio program sponsored by USA TODAY.

  • 22 Wednesday 11:00 – 11:45 Session I: Lending & Crowd –
Alternative Lending is Dead (thankfully!)…Long Live Data.
Alternative lending has become a hot topic globally, but Kabbage looks at the world of lending very differently. Rob Frohwein sees Kabbage not as a lending company that leverages data, but rather a data company that happens to be in lending. With this construct in mind, Rob and the team at Kabbage are focusing on building a global data infrastructure and leveraging it to provide capital to small businesses in the U.S. and to arm some of the largest institutions in the world to do the same in their geographies.

What will your future wealth manager look like
The world of wealth management is changing: customers demand data faster than humans can produce it; expected returns are lower and there is major fee compression. Robots run quant funds and match human returns. They don’t switch off at night, they don’t get emotional and they don’t demand large bonuses. And they get smarter with age – they don’t lose their memory! What will your future wealth manager look like; could it be a cyborg?

  • 22 Wednesday 15:15 – 15:35 Session III Investment  & Wealth Management –
FinTech Innovation: from Robo-Advisors to Goal Based Investing and Gamification.
The Wealth Management industry is facing a period of profound transformation due to technology, investors’ behaviours and regulation. Wealth Management institutions can build a successful agenda for digital innovation only if they understand the shift from a distribution channel of financial products into a distribution channel of financial advice. This is not easy, and Robo-Advisors are the best representation of this change of approach. Yet, Robo-Advisors themselves cannot move out of the disruption they created if they do not embrace more aggressively the principles and methods of Goal Based Investing. The industry must innovate in FINance and not only in TECHnology, which means to transform the quantitative methods beyond Modern Portfolio Theory to craft a better inter-temporal understanding of the potential future performance of actual products, actual liabilities hence actual portfolios against financial targets (asset values or post-retirement income streams). The professional shift from a market oriented perspective towards a client/portfolio centric definition of the asset allocation can be facilitated by Probabilistic Scenario Optimisation. But risk and return, alias fears and ambitions, cannot enter the new equation if investors and their advisors do not change at the same time their behavioural approach to investing. Therefore, educational Gamification has the potential to become a growing field of innovation, to help educate digital financial advisors and their digital clients, to change their investment behaviour by learning what money is for, how to invest and what to believe in when setting financial goals.
